Water Main Break Update

A Message from the Haledon Office of Emergency Management

Please be advised that the water main break on Church Street has been repaired, and Church Street has been re-opened.

We appreciate your cooperation.

Why Water Main Breaks Are More Common This Time of Year?

Water main breaks occur more frequently during colder months due to freeze and thaw cycles. As the ground freezes and thaws, it expands and contracts, placing additional stress on underground water mains and service lines.

How Residents Can Help Prevent Frozen Pipes and Water Issues at Home?

Residents are encouraged to take the following precautions during cold weather:

Allow faucets to drip slightly to keep water moving during extreme cold.
Insulate exposed pipes, especially in basements, crawl spaces, and exterior walls.

Keep cabinet doors open under sinks to allow warm air to circulate around plumbing.

Maintain a consistent indoor temperature, even when away from home.
Know the location of your main water shutoff valve in case of an emergency.

Public Health Guidance for Residents With No Water or Low Water Pressure:

Residents experiencing little or no water pressure are advised to follow these recommendations from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):

Use bottled water for drinking, cooking, brushing teeth, and food preparation whenever possible.

If tap water must be used and there is concern about water quality, bring water to a rolling boil for at least one minute, then allow it to cool before use.

Do not use ice from refrigerators or freezers unless it was made with boiled or bottled water.

Limit water use to essential needs only until normal service is restored.
When possible, store emergency water.

Warming Shelter and Drinking Water Availability:

The Haledon Senior Center remains available as a warming shelter for any resident in need. Fresh drinking water will be available at this location for residents utilizing the warming shelter. Residents wishing to use this service are asked to check in first at the Haledon Police Department.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation as crews actively continue repairs.

Once again, additional updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
