City of Demorest Advises Residents to Brace for Incoming Winter Storm and Safeguard Water Lines
The City of Demorest continues to track a significant winter weather pattern set to impact Northeast Georgia, with effects beginning late this afternoon and persisting through the weekend and into early next week. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for the area, effective from this afternoon through early Sunday morning, February 1. Snow is expected Saturday, January 31, with potential accumulations of several inches, followed by dangerously low temperatures dropping into the single digits or teens overnight, accompanied by an Extreme Cold Watch starting Saturday evening. Wind chills could fall well below zero, heightening risks to exposed infrastructure.
These extended periods of sub-freezing conditions heighten the potential for frozen pipes and disruptions to water service.
Protecting Your Plumbing and Water ServiceResidents are strongly advised to prepare immediately to guard against freezing:
- Wrap and insulate any exposed water pipes, particularly in crawl spaces, basements, garages, or outside walls.
- Close off and insulate outdoor faucets and hose bibs.
- Open cabinet doors under sinks to allow warm air circulation around pipes.
- Practice water conservation by reducing unnecessary usage, and avoiding non-essential water activities to support overall system stability during this high-risk period.
Road Safety and Municipal Response City personnel are on alert and ready to address hazardous conditions, including treating and clearing roads where feasible. Snow and ice could make travel treacherous, especially on bridges, hills, and shaded areas. Residents are encouraged to stay off the roads if possible; if travel is essential, drive slowly, and maintain extra distance.
Ongoing Cold and Potential Impacts The most severe cold is anticipated Saturday night into Monday, with temperatures staying below freezing and extreme wind chills posing additional challenges. This could lead to refreezing of surfaces and added strain on utilities.
Remaining Vigilant Keep an eye on National Weather Service alerts, local news sources, and City communications for the latest developments. The City of Demorest will issue further updates as conditions warrant.
Resident safety is our foremost concern. Take steps today to protect your home's plumbing, use water thoughtfully, and assist vulnerable neighbors during this challenging cold snap.
Respectfully,
Mark Musselwhite
