An Update from Mayor Jabbour on ICE
Dear Hoboken Community,
Earlier today, my office received reports of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activity along the Hoboken–Jersey City border. Upon learning of the situation, Councilman Joe Quintero and I went directly to the area near the 9th Street Light Rail Station, where we spoke to multiple witnesses who confirmed they saw unmarked vehicles and several individuals being apprehended from the light rail train and in the area of the station.
At this time, we have no additional information about the scope of this operation. I have been in direct and immediate communication with Hoboken Police Chief Steven Aguiar and Public Safety Director Ken Ferrante. The Hoboken Police Department was not notified in advance and did not assist in federal civil immigration enforcement.
We have also briefed Congressman Rob Menendez of today’s sighting so that his office can investigate, and I have been in contact with Mayor Solomon in Jersey City. I will continue to work with Congressman Menendez, as well as Senators Cory Booker and Andy Kim to request additional information and ensure that our communities receive clarity and support, especially for the family members of the people who were apprehended. We will monitor the situation closely and share verified updates as soon as they are available.
I know how unsettling and frightening this news can feel, especially for our immigrant neighbors. Hoboken is a Fair and Welcoming community, and our diversity is one of our greatest strengths. We remain committed to supporting every resident, regardless of background or immigration status. You are valued, you are part of our community, and you are not alone.
Please take care of yourselves and one another. If you or someone you know is feeling anxious, uncertain, or in need of guidance, resources and support are available through the Office of Constituent Services who can connect you to local advocacy organizations, legal aid partners, and community groups.
You can reach the Office of Constituent Services at [email protected] and I encourage you to review the following resources:
- The ACLU offers a "Know Your Rights – Immigrant Rights" guide
- The New Jersey Office of New Americans (ONA) supports new Americans through outreach, education, and resources, including an asylum guide and free legal services for income-eligible residents facing deportation. Visit NewAmericans.nj.gov or call 732-572-9100 ext. 8782 for non-detained immigration matters or 1-888-894-0612 for detention-related inquiries.
We are here for you, and we encourage anyone who needs assistance to reach out.
Many thanks,
Mayor Emily B. Jabbour
