An important message from the Mayor & Council on the March 10 school Special Election
Representatives from the Mayor and Council have met with the School’s Superintendent and Board of Education President several times over the past few months and have been made fully aware of the current financial situation that the Board is facing. Due to a number of factors, including a diminished budget surplus, as well as significant increases in insurance premiums and energy costs, the community has been advised that an operating budget referendum increase of 3.1 million dollars will be presented to the voters on March 10, 2026.
In its role, the Governing Body does not take a position either in favor of or against this proposal. Historically, we have always remained neutral over Board of Education matters as a whole. However, it is important that the public be fully informed of the facts and the potential consequences of this critically important decision. To that end, the Board is currently offering informational sessions and your Mayor and Council encourage residents to take advantage of these opportunities. To ask questions and get the facts.
The proposed referendum is intended to maintain the current level of services and educational standards that our community presently enjoys. Voters will be presented with a binary choice: to vote in favor of the proposal or against it.
Our K–8 school district has a well-established reputation for excellence and for preparing students for success at the high school level and beyond. A significant reduction in school resources would inevitably affect the district’s ability to continue delivering the same quality of education. While the increase if passed will cost the average home $1,984 in additional property taxes, non-passage will undoubtably have an impact on property values within the community.
The Mayor and Council urge all residents to inform themselves fully about this proposal and its potential consequences prior to voting. Please seek information directly from the School Superintendent and the Board of Education, rather than relying on social media or unofficial sources.
