Extreme Cold Warning this weekend
The City of Hoboken is under a National Weather Service (NWS) Extreme Cold Warning from 10 a.m., tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 7, through 1 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 8, and a wind advisory from 9 a.m. tomorrow through 12 a.m. Sunday, with the forecasted conditions considered extremely dangerous.
The Hoboken Department of Public Safety and the Office of Emergency Management (OEM) are urging residents to take the anticipated extremely low temperatures seriously and to protect themselves and their families, including pets, by limiting outdoor exposure.
Those who must go out should wear layers and cover all exposed skin. The Hoboken Division of Health encourages residents to check on senior family members and neighbors.
Heating requirement and safety reminders from the Health Division & Fire Department
Remember that property owners in Hoboken are required to provide adequate heat from Oct. 1 through May 1. Municipal code requires heating systems to be properly installed, maintained, and capable of safely heating all habitable rooms and bathrooms to at least 68 degrees.
If you experience insufficient heat, contact your landlord first. If the issue is not resolved, contact the Hoboken Health Division at 201-420-2000 ext. 1620.
The Hoboken Fire Department wants to make sure those who use space heaters, do so safely by remembering the following:
- Do not leave space heaters unattended.
- It is illegal to use kerosene heaters indoors.
- Keep anything that can burn at least three feet away from heating equipment, like the furnace, fireplace, wood stove, or portable space heater.
- Have a three-foot “kid-free zone” around open fires and space heaters.
- Never use your oven to heat your home.
- Remember to turn portable heaters off when leaving the room or going to bed.
Protect your pipes
To avoid frozen pipes and other cold-weather related emergencies, the OEM recommends:
- Check any pipes that may be exposed to the cold and ensure they are properly insulated.
- Familiarize yourself with the location of your water and furnace shutoffs so you can act quickly in an emergency.
- If you live in an apartment complex, contact your management company now to confirm you have their 24‑hour emergency service number.
- If you own a home, make sure you have contact information for a 24‑hour plumbing service readily available.
- Open hot and cold faucets enough to let them drip slowly. Keeping water moving within the pipes can prevent them from freezing.
Anyone with a plumping related emergency, including a burst pipe, or broken furnace, can contact Hoboken Police at (201) 420-2100 or Hoboken Fire at (201) 420-2004. If you are displaced due to heating or plumbing issues, OEM can assist by providing access to heating facilities. We also encourage you to have a backup plan and identify close relatives or friends you could stay with if you prefer not to stay in a facility.
