Cold Weather Advisory in effect
The City of Hoboken is under a National Weather Service (NWS) Cold Weather Advisory until from 10 a.m., tomorrow, Monday, Feb. 9, with wind chills forecasted at -8 degrees.
The Hoboken Department of Public Safety and the Office of Emergency Management (OEM) are continuing to urge residents to take the low temperatures seriously and to protect themselves and their families, including pets, by limiting outdoor exposure.
Those who must go out should wear layers and cover all exposed skin. The Hoboken Division of Health encourages residents to check on senior family members and neighbors.
Contact PSE&G in case of power outage
Please report power outages and downed wires to PSEG at https://nj.myaccount.pseg.com/myservicepublic/outagepublic, text OUT to 4PSEG (47734), or call 1-800-436-PSEG (7734)
If you see downed utility lines or trees, call the Hoboken Fire Department dispatch number at 201-420-2004. Do not approach downed power lines.
Protect your pipes
To avoid frozen pipes and other cold-weather related emergencies, the OEM recommends:
- Check any pipes that may be exposed to the cold and ensure they are properly insulated.
- Familiarize yourself with the location of your water and furnace shutoffs so you can act quickly in an emergency.
- If you live in an apartment complex, contact your management company now to confirm you have their 24‑hour emergency service number.
- If you own a home, make sure you have contact information for a 24‑hour plumbing service readily available.
- Open hot and cold faucets enough to let them drip slowly. Keeping water moving within the pipes can prevent them from freezing.
Anyone with a plumping related emergency, including a burst pipe, or broken furnace, can contact Hoboken Police at (201) 420-2100 or Hoboken Fire at (201) 420-2004. If you are displaced due to heating or plumbing issues, OEM can assist by providing access to heating facilities. OEM also encourages you to have a backup plan and identify close relatives or friends you could stay with if you prefer not to stay in a facility.
Heating requirement and safety reminders from the Health Division & Fire Department
Remember that property owners in Hoboken are required to provide adequate heat from Oct. 1 through May 1. Municipal code requires heating systems to be properly installed, maintained, and capable of safely heating all habitable rooms and bathrooms to at least 68 degrees.
If you experience insufficient heat, contact your landlord first. If the issue is not resolved, contact the Hoboken Health Division at 201-420-2000 ext. 1620.
The Hoboken Fire Department wants to make sure those who use space heaters, do so safely by remembering the following:
- Do not leave space heaters unattended.
- It is illegal to use kerosene heaters indoors.
- Keep anything that can burn at least three feet away from heating equipment, like the furnace, fireplace, wood stove, or portable space heater.
- Have a three-foot “kid-free zone” around open fires and space heaters.
- Never use your oven to heat your home.
- Remember to turn portable heaters off when leaving the room or going to bed.
Hudson County Warming Center information
Due to the extreme cold, the Hudson County Warming Center in Kearney is open to those in need. Regular pick up and drop off times are in effect and include a stop in Hoboken, on the south side of Observer Highway and Park Avenue. The scheduled pickup time for Hoboken is 7:30 p.m.
If you know of, or see, someone who needs a warm place to stay, Hoboken Police can also help get them to shelter. Call HPD's non-emergency number: 201-420-2100.
Street cleaning suspended Monday & Tuesday
The City has suspended street cleaning enforcement Monday and Tuesday.
Community members are asked to please continue to dig out and move their vehicles to avoid impeding snow removal operations. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.
Overnight snow removal on Garden Street tomorrow night
All vehicles parked on Garden Street between 14th Street and Observer Highway MUST move by 6 p.m. Monday night, Feb. 9, to allow for overnight snow removal.
Temporary No Parking signs have been posted, and those who do not move their vehicles are subject to ticketing and towing. Overnight snow removal operations are expected to end by 7 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 10.
Drivers are advised to anticipate intermittent rolling closures of Garden Street throughout Monday night. Officers with the Hudson County Sheriff’s Department will be on site to assist with detours. Garden Street will re-open on a rolling basis as each block is cleared of snow, allowing cars to park on the street as soon as the block is cleared.
Please be reminded that snow removal operations involve large heavy equipment, including plows, payloaders, and dump trucks, which will cause noise. We apologize in advance for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience as crews work to clear the parking lanes of snow.
