SCAM ALERT

Kern County Sheriff’s Office Warns Public of New Phone and Text Scams

The Kern County Sheriff’s Office is alerting the public to an increase in phone and text message scams targeting local residents. Scammers are impersonating Sheriff’s Office personnel and demanding payment for fraudulent claims, including fake warrants, missed jury duty, or court-related issues. These individuals often request payment through gift cards, Bitcoin, or other electronic methods and may threaten arrest to pressure victims.

In addition to these tactics, scammers are now sending text messages claiming that recipients owe toll road or DMV fees. These messages are fraudulent. Do not click any links or send payment.

New Scam Reported:
The Sheriff’s Office has received reports of callers claiming to be Kern County Sheriff’s Office employees and requesting payment for the use of ankle monitors for an incarcerated friend or family member upon their release. This is a scam. The Kern County Sheriff’s Office will never request payment over the phone or via text message.

Warning Signs of a Scam:

  • Callers may spoof official phone numbers to appear legitimate.
  • They demand urgent payment and refuse to allow you to hang up.
  • They request payment through unconventional methods such as gift cards or cryptocurrency.

If you receive a suspicious call or text, hang up immediately and do not provide any personal or financial information.

To report a scam, contact the Kern County Sheriff’s Office at (661) 861-3110.
