Prepare for increased commuter activity in Hoboken starting next week; Municipal offices closed Monday
City preparing for anticipated increased passengers at Hoboken Terminal and on buses and PATH trains due to NJ Transit work
The City of Hoboken is coordinating with transit partners to prepare for a likely increase in commuter activity in Hoboken, beginning next week, as New Jersey Transit (NJT) temporarily reduces and re-routes weekday rail service to accommodate work on the new Portal Bridge.
NJT advises that the temporary service changes, which begin with special weekend and holiday schedules on Sunday, Feb. 15 and Monday, Feb. 16, will result in modified train schedules, reduced service frequencies on certain segments, longer travel times, and some train consolidations or cancellations. These service changes are expected to last through March 15. During this work, many NJT trains that normally operate directly into New York’s Penn Station will terminate at Hoboken Terminal. From Hoboken, commuters will transfer to PATH trains, ferries, or buses to continue into Manhattan.
To help accommodate the anticipated increase in passengers in Hoboken, NJT has announced cross honoring will be in effect for Midtown Direct customers in Hoboken, with PATH, the New York Waterway (NYW) ferry route between Hoboken Terminal and Midtown/ W. 39th St., and NJ Transit Bus. NJT has informed the City that 126 bus service will be increased between Hoboken Terminal and the Port Authority Bus Terminal, including the introduction of buses uptown to help reduce crowding for NYC bound riders. Customers using the Route 126 bus service should anticipate more crowded conditions than usual and are encouraged to allow for extra time and check the NJT app for real time bus arrival information.
Additionally, NJT will cross-honor with NY Waterway ferries weekdays between Hoboken Terminal and Midtown Manhattan. Expanded ferry service will be provided to Midtown Manhattan only, during the morning and evening peak periods.
Cross-honoring will be in effect with PATH at Hoboken to 33rd Street only, and while PATH plans to increase service during peak travel times, customers are advised to plan for extra travel time and higher passenger volumes. Customers are asked to consider working remotely or avoid traveling during peak commuting hours when possible.
