Press Release: February 14, 2026 Officer Involved Shooting Update #2
On the evening of February 14, 2026, Fremont Police Detectives were actively assisting Bay Area law enforcement agencies in the apprehension of suspects responsible for residential burglaries. These same suspects were involved in similar crimes in Fremont in 2025. After committing multiple residential burglaries and other crimes in Bay Area cities on February 14, 2026 (some of which were on-viewed by law enforcement), four suspects returned to Fremont. When detectives attempted to arrest the suspects, a vehicle pursuit was initiated. The suspect vehicle was ultimately disabled, and all four suspects fled on foot.
Preliminary investigation suggests that at approximately 9:45 p.m., while attempting to apprehend a suspect, a Fremont sergeant was bitten by a police canine and he unintentionally discharged his service weapon, striking the suspect. The suspect was transported to an area hospital for treatment. The injured suspect remains in a hospital and is receiving ongoing medical treatment for his non-life-threatening injury. While hospitalized, the suspect continues to be in police custody for various crimes that occurred in the Bay Area. The suspect is expected to be released from the hospital in the coming days, at which time he will be booked for multiple outstanding residential burglary warrants by Bay Area municipal law enforcement agencies.
Hospitalized suspect: Freddy Magana Gonzales, 25 years old, Redwood City resident.
The three other suspects were taken into custody by Fremont Police personnel, who were later turned over to another Bay Area municipal law enforcement agency for booking of crimes that include burglary, possession of stolen property, and possession of burglary tools. Fremont Police Department will also be pursuing a variety of criminal charges on all four suspects, including reckless evasion of a peace officer, possession of a concealed firearm, a felon in possession of a firearm, obliteration of a serial number on a firearm, resisting arrest, and theft.
Involved Fremont Police Sergeant: Sergeant James Taylor, 17 years of service with the Fremont Police Department (12 years as an officer and approximately 5 years as a sergeant). Sergeant Taylor is currently assigned to the Crime Reduction Unit. During the incident, Sergeant Taylor received medical care at a local trauma center for the injuries sustained as a result of being bitten by a police canine.
The Fremont Police Department is the primary agency conducting the comprehensive investigation into this Officer-Involved Shooting (OIS). It remains an active and ongoing investigation. As with previous OIS incidents, the Fremont Police Department is dedicated to transparency and will release additional information, including evidence and records, when appropriate and in accordance with State laws.
