Why It Matters
A buried hydrant can delay water access, and even 1–2 minutes can make a major difference in a structure fire.
Remember to clear snow around fire hydrants!
Keeping a fire hydrant clear of snow can save critical minutes during an emergency. Here’s how to do it properly:
How Much to Clear
- 3 feet around the hydrant in all directions
- A clear path from the street to the hydrant
- Clear to the ground (not just the top visible)
Best Practices
- Remove snow from the caps and sides so firefighters can access connections quickly.
- Don’t pile snow from driveways or sidewalks onto or around hydrants.
