STORM UPDATE 2/22/2026 9AM
Potentially Historic Winter Storm
Trenton and West Windsor Area
Bottom line: The National Weather Service states confidence remains high in a potentially historic winter storm through Monday, with life-threatening travel and crippling impacts possible. Blizzard Warnings now include all of New Jersey.
• Timing
○ Possible start time around 8:00 AM today for the Trenton area.
○ More likely, the more meaningful changeover and steady snow ramps up after 1:00 PM as precipitation transitions north to south and areas near and south of I-78 may begin as rain or a rain/snow mix.
○ Heaviest snowfall is expected this evening through Monday morning.
○ Snow winds down by Monday afternoon.
• Olaf Index (Snow): 9
○ Expected snowfall totals for the Trenton area: 18 to 24 inches.
○ Snowfall rates are expected to reach 1 to 2 inches per hour or greater during the peak.
○ Trenton hourly snowfall rate probabilities show a 90% chance of rates greater than 1 inch per hour at 10 PM, 1 AM, and 4 AM, continuing into the overnight period.
Olaf says this is not “cute snow globe snow.” This is “I just shoveled and it laughed at me” snow.
Teenage Shovel App
For this event, you will need to engage the Teenage Shovel App x2.
That means feed their friends fluffernutters to build strength. This is good training for spring sports.
If you are over 50, like me, this is heart attack snow. The Teenage Shovel App is mandatory. No negotiations.
• Dorothy Index (Wind): 8
○ Winds increase today and persist through Monday, with the strongest winds expected tonight into Monday morning.
○ Trenton wind gusts are shown up to about 46 mph.
○ Blowing and drifting snow can continue through Monday afternoon and evening, even after snowfall ends.
Dorothy says if your driveway is open space, it may become a snow drift exhibit. Toto has filed a complaint.
• Elsa Index (Ice): 3
○ Ice is not the primary hazard in the briefing, but rapid snow accumulation and wind-driven snow will make surfaces treacherous.
Elsa says you do not need a skating rink for it to be dangerous. A thin layer is plenty.
• Roads: 8
○ The National Weather Service warns of whiteout conditions and that travel will be treacherous and life-threatening during the peak.
○ There is currently a State of Emergency. While there is no travel ban, travel is not recommended. Repeat: Not recommended. If you get stranded, someone may not reach you for hours. Do not risk your life.
Stay home, work from home, vacation at home.
Township operations and DPW battle plan
From the Mayor’s report:
• DPW crews are scheduled to report Sunday morning.
• Once snow starts, DPW will salt all main roads.
• After the storm and when roads are passable, additional salt will be applied as needed.
• The snow plow contractor typically reports once 4 to 6 inches is on the ground and begins secondary roads.
• Multiple passes will be needed. Expect snow banks on both sides of the road.
• After the storm, depending on totals, the Township will evaluate trucking snow.
Schools, Garbage, Township offices
No official announcements yet, but do not be surprised if all are canceled tomorrow based on timing and impacts. Don’t leave garbage out.
Preparedness and community support
• Finalize preparations now. The NWS notes the window to finalize preparations is rapidly closing.
• Stock up on essentials, charge devices, and stay off the roads during the peak.
• Check on neighbors and the elderly today. Make sure they have ready meals.
• Once the snow stops, help each other dig out and clear fire hydrants first. If it is in front of your house, it is yours. If there is a fire emergency, you will be the block hero.
• Keep your pups safe and warm. No animals should be out in this, Huskies excluded for short periods. I will be creating a racetrack in my backyard with the snow blower for the little dogs. Check gates and fences as wind gusts combined with 3 foot drifts will allow these little escape artists to break free.
If you need a note for your employer, I will be glad to hand them out. (Signed: Epstein’s Mother)
Stay safe and warm!
