Wilmington Police arrest man in connection to March 2022 fatal shooting incident:
Wilmington Police have arrested a man in connection to a March 2022 fatal shooting incident following an investigation.
On March 22nd, 2022 at approximately 9:00 p.m., members of the Uniformed Services Division responded to the 300 block of South Heald Street in reference to a shooting incident. Upon arrival, officers located a gunshot victim- 27-year-old Bilal Byrd, who was transported to the hospital in critical condition, and later succumbed to his injuries.
In 2025 Detective Devon Jones and Investigator Steven Rizzo of the Cold Case Unit began reviewing the case files. Through the course of their investigation Detective Jones and Investigator Rizzo identified 31-year-old Lambert Johnson as the suspect. On February 16th 2026, the case was presented to the New Castle County Grand Jury and an indictment was returned for Johnson. Johnson is currently being held at the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on unrelated charges.
Johnson has been charged with the following offenses:
- Murder (First Degree)
- Murder During the Commission of a Felony
- Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony- Two Counts
- Conspiracy (First Degree)
- Attempted Robbery (First Degree)
- Conspiracy (Second Degree)
- Carrying a Concealed Deadly Weapon
- Possession of a Firearm or Ammunition by a Person Prohibited- Two Counts
