Fatal Traffic Collision Involving Bicyclist Under Investigation in Hesperia

INVOLVED PARTY: John Hewitt, 48-year-old, Resident of Victorville, Bicycle Rider
INVOLVED PARTY(1): Driver of green, Subaru Forester
INVOLVED PARTY(2): Driver of a white, Toyota Camry
SUMMARY:
On February 20, 2026, at approximately 5:28 a.m., deputies from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Hesperia Station and personnel from San Bernardino County Fire responded to the intersection of US 395 Highway and Joshua Street regarding a traffic collision involving a vehicle and a pedestrian.
Upon arrival deputies located an adult male, later identified as John Hewitt, unresponsive in the intersection, where he was pronounced deceased by emergency personnel.
The Hesperia Station’s Major Accident Investigation Team (M.A.I.T.) responded and took over the investigation. Preliminary findings indicated that while Hewitt was riding his bicycle he was struck by a driver of a Subaru. The impact knocked the cyclist off his bicycle and onto the ground. While the man was on the ground, he was subsequently struck by a driver of a Toyota Camry. Both motorists remained on scene and were cooperative with the investigation.
