Press Release
On 2/28/26 at approximately 1 pm, the Harper Woods Police Department was called by a Detroit Police Department detective regarding a case involving a missing 1-year-old child. In the process of the Detroit Police Department’s investigation, they learned that a vehicle belonging to the father of the child had been impounded by the Harper Woods Police Department on 2/27/26. The vehicle was towed from the 20600 block of Damman Street due to being abandoned, improperly parked on the prohibited side of the street, and blocking a resident’s driveway. The vehicle was locked at the time of the tow and was unable to be thoroughly inventoried.
Suspecting that the missing child may still be in the vehicle, Detroit Police and Harper Woods officers immediately responded to the tow yard in Eastpointe and located the crying 1-year-old child in the rear of the vehicle. The child was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment and observation. At the time of this statement, the child was listed in stable condition and expected to fully recover. Child Protective Services was contacted by Harper Woods detectives, and a case has been opened.
The Harper Woods Police Department currently has a male in custody in connection with this incident. Detectives are in the early stages of an investigation to determine potential criminal charges.
