CRIME PREVENTION TIPS
Did you know that most residential burglaries occur during the daytime and during business hours? Below are some helpful tips for preventing burglaries. While most residential burglaries occur during the day on weekdays, the following tips may be applicable at any time.
  • Install deadbolt locks featuring a 1” metal bar on all non-sliding exterior doors.
  • Garage doors should always remain closed and locked. Ensure all doors and windows are closed and securely fastened.
  • Avoid hiding a spare key under the doormat, in a flowerpot, or in any obvious spot.
  • Keep tools and ladders stored out of sight and locked away.
  • Trim shrubbery away from doors and windows. Burglars can break in within a minute.
  • Ensure the perimeter of your home is well illuminated.
  • Use timers on lights, radios, or televisions to create the illusion that you are home.
  • Leave a vehicle parked in your parking area.
  • Keep some blinds, shades, or curtains open to give the impression that you are home.
  • Do not leave a message on your answering machine that indicates you are away from home.
Avoid Provoking a Thief
  • Lawn mowers, barbecues, and bicycles should ideally be kept out of view.
  • Always ensure that your garden sheds and garages are securely locked.
  • Consider using curtains on the windows of your garage or basement.
  • Avoid leaving messages on your front door like “Gone shopping,” even if it’s used in a joking manner.
Report any suspicious individuals to the Temple Sheriff’s Station at (626) 285-7171, or if you see a burglary in progress, please call 9-1-1.
