St. Patrick’s Day Safety Advisory 2026
With St. Patrick’s Day falling during the week this year, celebrations are expected to take place throughout the surrounding weekend. The Hawthorne Police Department Traffic Bureau encourages everyone to enjoy the festivities responsibly and to make safety a priority.
Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs places your life and the lives of others at serious risk. Please plan ahead and make responsible choices.
Plan Ahead:
- Arrange for a designated sober driver, public transportation, or a ride-share service before you begin celebrating.
- Remember that buzzed driving is still drunk driving even small amounts of alcohol can impair judgment and reaction time.
- Walking while intoxicated can also be dangerous. If you are impaired, arrange a safe ride home.
- If you observe a suspected impaired driver, safely pull over and report it by dialing 911.
- If a friend or family member is about to drive while impaired, take their keys and help arrange a safe ride home.
Pedestrian Safety:
- Avoid walking home while intoxicated use a ride service or travel with a sober companion.
- Stay alert and avoid distractions such as texting while walking near traffic.
- Wear bright or reflective clothing when walking at night.
- Always use sidewalks, intersections, and marked crosswalks when available.
