Subject Arrested after Discharging a Firearm

On March 14, 2026, at approximately 8:04 p.m., the Petaluma Police Department Dispatch Center received a call from a resident in the 1600 block of Baywood Drive reporting that his roommate had accidentally shot him with a firearm. The roommate was later identified as Michael Millane (53-year-old Petaluma resident).

Officers and fire personnel responded to the residence and contacted the victim outside the home suffering from a single gunshot wound to the leg. The victim was transported to a local hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

Millane later exited the residence and was taken into custody without incident. He will be transported to the Sonoma County Jail and booked on the following charge: 246.3 PC (negligent discharge of a firearm). The suspected firearm used in the incident was later recovered by officers. The circumstances leading up to the shooting remain under investigation.

The Petaluma Police Department reminds community members of the importance of safe firearm handling and secure storage. Firearms should always be handled responsibly and stored in a manner that prevents unintentional discharge or unauthorized access. Fortunately, this incident did not result in more serious injuries.
