On March 14, 2026, at 6:57 PM, Santa Maria PD officers responded to a report of a suspect involved in the theft of a dog and reportedly armed. Upon arrival near 1000 W. Cook St, the suspect attempted to flee on foot and shouted that he had a handgun. Officers pursued the suspect, putting themselves at potential risk, but employed effective tactics that ensured their safety. The suspect was taken into custody without incident. A search revealed no weapon, and no injuries were reported.
