Daughter of Retired Newark Fire Captain Thanks Public Safety Director Miranda for Celebrating Dad’s 100th Birthday
Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda, Sr., received a letter of thanks for the February 20, 2026, celebration held on behalf of retired Newark Fire Captain Theodore Popovich’s 100th birthday. The letter was sent from Captain Popovich’s daughter, Sue Phlipot, who expressed appreciation for the solidarity and support shown to her father.

Fire Chief Del Ortiz proudly led a team of Firefighters to the Cranford home of retired Newark Fire Captain Popovich in honor of his centennial birthday.
Captain Popovich began serving the City of Newark as a Firefighter on December 16, 1949. He joined the Newark Fire Division after serving in the U.S. Army during WWII in Germany beginning in 1944. During his successful military career, he earned the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, and the New Jersey Distinguished Service Medal.
Popovich was promoted to the rank of Fire Captain on February 14, 1967. He retired from the Newark Fire Division on May 1, 1982.
