Firearms Recovered During ABAT Inspections
The Oakland Police Department Alcoholic Beverage Action Team (ABAT Unit) inspected two smoke shops operating in Oakland on March 18, 2026. The first investigation occurred in the 3800 block of San Leandro Street, where officers seized (pictured above left) flavored tobacco, untaxed cigarettes in violation of state law, and narcotics paraphernalia for sale. Additionally, officers located a small amount of Narcotics and a firearm disguised as a cell phone.
The second inspection was in the 2100 block of International Boulevard, where ABAT carried out a tobacco retail check. Officers recovered (pictured above right) flavored tobacco, untaxed cigarettes that broke state law, and narcotics paraphernalia for sale. They also discovered a personally manufactured illegal AR-style assault weapon.
There were no arrests in either case, which were both forwarded to the Alameda County District Attorney's Office. The Oakland City Attorney's Office will also receive recommendations from investigators on any civil or legal findings that warrant follow-up.
The California Department of Justice funded this special enforcement, supported by Proposition 56 Grant.
OPD is committed to keeping the community safe and building trust with residents. We encourage everyone to report any suspicious or illegal tobacco sales, including sales to minors, by calling our ABAT Complaint Hotline at (510) 777-8677.
