Officers assigned to the Santa Maria Police Department Gang Suppression Team were on patrol in the area of 200 W. Williams Street, a location known for gang activity, when they observed three male juveniles walking together. Officers recognized the individuals from prior contacts, including one documented gang member.
Officers initiated a consensual encounter that developed into a lawful detention based on the totality of the circumstances. During a pat-down search for officer safety, officers located a handgun on one of the juveniles. The firearm was determined to be an unlawfully manufactured “ghost gun,” lacking a serial number and not produced by a licensed manufacturer.
The juvenile was taken into custody without incident and booked at juvenile hall for applicable weapons violations.
