Stevens cliff repair to require temporary daytime closure of Sinatra Drive; NJDEP work to impact traffic on Observer Highway this week

Sinatra Drive to close temporarily to vehicular traffic for Castle Point bluff rockfall mitigation repairs

Stevens Institute of Technology will begin repairs next week to the Castle Point bluff along Sinatra Drive to address falling rocks between Eighth and Ninth Streets. Work to set up a temporary lane shift for the project, will require the daytime closure of the vehicular lane along Sinatra Drive from Fifth Street to Sinatra Drive North, beginning tomorrow, Wednesday, March 25, through Friday, March 27, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.

The road will reopen to northbound vehicles during non-working hours. Southbound traffic will continue to detour via Hudson Street. The multi-use path and sidewalks will remain open for pedestrians and bicyclists.

NJDEP test pitting begins on or about Thursday; Eastbound Observer Highway will be closed at Washington Street 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) will conduct test pitting operations for the Rebuild by Design – Hudson River project starting on or about Thursday, March 26, along Observer Highway between Washington Street and Willow Avenue.

During the working hours of 8 a.m. and 6 p.m., all eastbound vehicular traffic on Observer Highway between Washington and Hudson Streets will be detoured onto Washington Street. NJ Transit buses will be allowed to travel eastbound. The westbound lane of Observer Highway will remain open with the assistance of traffic control officers.

This work will take place on weekdays only, and Observer Highway will reopen to vehicular traffic, in both directions, overnight and weekends. Test pitting operations are expected to take approximately two weeks, but schedules are subject to change due to weather and unforeseen circumstances.

Drivers are advised to follow all posted signage, plan for possible delays, and allow extra travel time. Pedestrian access will be maintained, however temporary detours will be in place

The Rebuild by Design – Hudson River project aims to mitigate flooding caused by storm surge through the construction of a resist structure comprised of levees, berms, and floodgates. The resist structure will be integrated into the urban landscape, through various streetscape improvements.
