Advisory

From the Desk of SHERIFF LEVON ALLEN. Statement Regarding Jail Security Operation.

Earlier today, deputies and correctional officers conducted a planned security shakedown for contraband within the Super Max housing unit of the county jail. This unit houses inmates charged with the most serious violent offenses, including murder and attempted murder (aggravated assault or aggravated battery).

During the operation, multiple homemade weapons, commonly referred to as “shanks,” were discovered. As part of standard procedure, 18 inmates from the affected area were relocated to allow deputies to continue a thorough search and maintain the safety and security of the facility.

While inmates were being transported, four individuals became non-compliant and initiated a disturbance in an apparent attempt to disrupt the ongoing operation and prevent additional contraband from being located.

During this incident, one inmate struck a deputy in the face, and three additional inmates joined in the assault.

Deputies responded immediately and, within approximately two minutes, regained full control of the situation. Additional personnel responded within seconds to assist in restoring order.

At the time of the incident, 19 personnel—including deputies, correctional officers, and supervisors—were assigned to the unit, overseeing approximately 156 inmates. Emergency medical services were requested as a precaution. Three deputies sustained minor injuries, including a sprained wrist, an inflamed hand, a laceration to the lip, and an inflamed bicep. All injuries were non-life-threatening.

Following the incident, operations continued without further disruption. Deputies completed the full shakedown, which began at approximately 7:36 a.m. and concluded at 1:04 p.m., ensuring the facility was secured and order was fully restored.

The four inmates involved in the assault will face additional charges.

I remain steadfast in securing the future and protecting the peace. The safety and security of inmates, staff, and the community will remain my top priorities, and a few bad actors will not disrupt that mission.

Let me be clear: every individual housed in this unit is charged with murder or attempted murder (aggravated assault or aggravated battery). Despite that reality, our deputies and correctional staff will continue to maintain order, uphold the law, and ensure they return home safely to their families each and every day.
