CRIME PREVENTION TIPS
The simplest and most economical ways to avoid burglaries are to lock your windows and doors, install high-quality security locks, and install external lights. The following are a few quick tips that may prevent you from becoming a victim of a home/business burglary.
- Go with solid or metal exterior doors that are installed properly. Interior doors just aren’t strong enough.
- Use 3-inch screws to secure the strike plate into the house frame for extra strength.
- If your doors don’t close snugly, add weather stripping to tighten things up.
- Make sure every exterior door has a deadbolt (a regular knob lock alone isn’t enough), and always lock both when you leave.
- For sliding doors and windows, place a simple block (like a broomstick or dowel) in the track for added security.
- Skip hiding spare keys outside. Leave one with a neighbor or someone you trust instead.
- Leave a light on when you’re not home to make it look occupied.
- Consider installing an alarm system for extra peace of mind.
- Add more outdoor lighting, especially motion-activated or timer-controlled lights.
- Keep your yard tidy. Pick up trash and bring in mail and newspapers daily. If you’re away, ask someone to help with this.
- Consider putting up “Beware of Dog” or “Alarm System” signs as they can help deter intruders.
- Trim trees and bushes so doors and windows stay visible and don’t provide hiding spots.
- Store valuables in a safe and keep a record of serial numbers, just in case.
- If you move into a new place, always change the locks right away.
