The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) Mental Evaluation Team (MET) will be hosting a 2-hour Autism and Law Enforcement Awareness course for its department members. MET has partnered with Kate Movius, founder of Autism Interaction Solutions, for over 8 years to provide this training for LASD personnel.
This interactive training program provides law enforcement officers with specialized strategies to safely and effectively engage with individuals with autism and other developmental disabilities. The course combines educational content about autism's neurological basis with hands-on exercises that help officers understand the unique sensory and communication challenges faced by autistic individuals. Students learn to identify autism indicators, understand why compliance may be difficult for this population, and practice appropriate response techniques including modified communication approaches, restraint considerations, and scene management. The program's distinctive feature includes live interaction with autistic participants and their caregivers, providing officers with real-world insights into autism behaviors that might otherwise be misinterpreted as non-compliance, mental illness, or aggression.
