The Clayton County Sheriff’s Office is actively investigating a deputy-involved shooting that occurred this evening in the area of Interstate 285 and Riverdale Road, beneath the airport runway tunnel. Citizens are advised to avoid the area as law enforcement continues investigative operations.
At approximately 8:48 p.m., Clayton County Police responded to an armed robbery that occurred off Taylor Road. Preliminary information indicates that multiple suspects, armed with assault rifle-style weapons, approached a victim, held him at gunpoint, and stole his cell phone and firearm.
The victim immediately contacted 911 and provided critical information, including a description of the suspect vehicle as a distinctive orange Kia.
While Clayton County Police continued their initial response and investigation, Sheriff’s Deputies began searching the area for the suspect vehicle. Members of our Blackhawk and Cobra units located the orange Kia traveling along Old National Highway, entering Fulton County.
The vehicle subsequently entered Interstate 285 East, re-entering Clayton County. Deputies attempted to conduct a traffic stop; however, the vehicle refused to yield and fled at a high rate of speed.
A pursuit ensued, during which deputies executed a PIT maneuver, successfully disabling the vehicle beneath the airport runway tunnel on Interstate 285.
Four suspects fled the vehicle on foot. During the encounter, one suspect was shot by a deputy. That suspect sustained injuries to the arm and leg and is currently alert, conscious, and breathing. He is being transported to a local hospital for treatment.
All four suspects are now in custody:

3. DESHANTE MARTEZ PHILLIPS 6-15-1997
4. Suspect 4 is a 14 year old juvenile.
The Georgia State Patrol has been requested to investigate the PIT maneuver. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been requested to conduct an independent investigation into the deputy-involved shooting. Additionally, the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office Internal Affairs Division will conduct a review of all policies and procedures related to this incident.
Upon completion of the investigation tonight the suspects will be turned over to Clayton County Police for the continuation of the armed robbery investigation.
This remains an active and ongoing investigation.
