Police Seek Help Locating Newark Man Wanted for Questioning in Shooting Investigation
Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda, Sr., requests the public’s help in locating Nahji S. Mayes, 29, of Newark, who is wanted for questioning about a shooting in which he was injured on Friday, March 20, 2026.
Police Officers responded to reports of a shooting in progress that occurred at approximately 8:46 p.m. in the 70 block of Baldwin Avenue. When officers arrived, they found Mayes lying on the ground bleeding from his right leg. Officers applied a tourniquet until Emergency Medical Services arrived to take him to University Hospital. Mayes told officers that he was struck by gunfire while taking out the trash.
Director Miranda urges anyone with information on Mayes’ whereabouts to call the Police Division’s 24-hour Crime Stopper tip line at 1-877-NWK-TIPS (1-877-695-8477). All anonymous Crime Stopper tips are kept confidential and could result in a reward.
