Attend the Arbor Day tree tour
Residents are invited to celebrate Arbor Day by joining the annual Joyce Kilmer Arbor Day Tree Tour on Friday, April 24, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Members of the City’s Shade Tree Commission and the City Arborist will guide participants through Hoboken’s urban tree canopy to highlight the diverse tree species found on City streets and in local parks.
The Hop bus tour, which begins at the Multi-Service Center at 124 Grand St., offers residents an opportunity to learn more about the role trees play in improving the community’s environment and quality of life. Trees help improve air quality by filtering pollutants and producing oxygen, reduce the urban heat island effect by lowering temperatures on streets and sidewalks during the summer, and help manage stormwater by absorbing rainfall and reducing runoff into the combined sewer system. Trees also support mental health and well-being by providing access to green space, and beautifying neighborhoods and streetscapes.

Learn more about the Hoboken Housing Authority Redevelopment Plan
Residents are invited to attend a community meeting about Phase 1 of the Hoboken Housing Authority (HHA) Redevelopment Plan on Wednesday, May 13, at 6 p.m. at 123 Jefferson St.
The City and HHA will discuss the plan to redevelop and rehabilitate the Hoboken Housing Authority’s aging housing stock, while ensuring that current residents are not permanently displaced as adopted by the Hoboken City Council following several public meetings, engagement sessions, and HHA board meetings.
The redevelopment plan calls for the rehabilitation or replacement of 1,354 existing housing units through the construction of new buildings ranging from six to 12 stories. It also includes significant infrastructure improvements, such as upgrades to stormwater and sewer systems to help reduce flooding. In addition, the plan proposes transportation improvements to enhance accessibility and circulation, the creation of a commercial corridor along Jackson Street, and the development of community-focused amenities. These amenities include new recreation spaces and a resiliency park along Marshall Street.
The project will be carried out in phases over the next 10 years and will minimize disruption to the more than 2,500 residents of the HHA. This phased approach is designed to reduce the need for relocations while prioritizing the timely replacement of existing housing.
The plan also allows for the future development of additional residential units, including affordable and workforce housing.
This meeting will provide an opportunity for residents to learn more about Phase 1 of the redevelopment plan, ask questions, and share their feedback.
