This past weekend, the Oakland Police Department (OPD) and community organizations held the annual "Guns to Gardens" gun buyback. People turned in 90 firearms, including Uzi-style pistols, a MAC-10, and AK-variant rifles.
Those who brought in a firearm received a gift card worth up to $300, no questions asked. Some people also received handmade garden tools created from earlier gun buybacks.
This event was made possible through the support of our community partners, dedicated volunteers, participating residents, Mayor Barbara Lee, OPD’s Ceasefire team, the Crime Gun Intelligence Center (CGIC), and OPD members.
