Milling & paving to begin on Observer Highway and on Madison St. on Monday, April 27; Prepare for road closures and parking restrictions

Beginning Monday, April 27, the City, in partnership with PSE&G and North Hudson Sewerage Authority (NHSA), will begin spring and summer paving projects on portions of Madison Street and portions of Observer Highway.

These projects will restore roadways impacted by recent infrastructure updates, including improvements to water mains and pressure valves, gas mains and pressure valves, and storm sewers to help reduce flooding.

Residents are advised to plan ahead for road closures, parking impacts, and traffic. Thank you for your patience.

Daytime milling and paving on Madison Street

Beginning Monday, April 27, NHSA contractors will begin milling and paving work in the Madison Street Infrastructure Improvement area (the area around ShopRite). Work will require road closures between the hours of 9 a.m. and 6 p.m., on the following dates and locations:

Monday, April 27 (milling) & Wednesday, April 29 (paving)

  • Madison Street between Eighth Street and Ninth Street (including the intersection of Madison & Ninth Streets)
  • Ninth Street between Monroe Street and Jefferson Street
Tuesday, April 28 (milling) & Thursday, April 30 (paving)
  • Madison Street between Ninth Street and 11th Street
  • 10th Street from the ShopRite parking lot to mid-block toward Jefferson Street
  • 11th Street between Madison Street and Monroe Street

Impacts to pedestrian travel will be limited as sidewalks will remain open. Temporary parking restrictions will be in effect from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on affected streets. Hoboken Police will be on site during working hours to assist with pedestrian safety and detours. Garages in the work zone will be inaccessible during work hours. Impacted residents have been previously notified by the contractor.

Be advised, on Tuesday, April 28, and Thursday, April 30, there will be no access to the ShopRite parking lot from Madison Street. All vehicles must enter and exit the parking lot from Monroe Street.

Please note that all schedules are subject to change due to weather and unforeseen circumstances.

PSE&G overnight milling and paving on Observer Highway/Newark Street

Roadway restoration related to underground PSE&G utility work will require overnight milling and paving between 7 p.m. and 5 a.m. to minimize impacts on traffic. During these hours, temporary road closures will be in effect. Drivers are encouraged to enter and exit Hoboken from the north end of the city, as construction activities will impact traffic circulation in southwest Hoboken.

The following locations will be impacted starting Monday, April 27 at 7 pm:

  • Eastbound Newark Street will be closed from Jackson Street to Henderson Street/Marin Boulevard at the firehouse.
  • Eastbound Observer will be closed from the firehouse at Henderson Street/Marin Boulevard to Jefferson Street
  • Westbound Observer Highway will be closed from Park Avenue to Henderson Street/ Marin Boulevard
  • Madison Street will be closed between Newark Street and Observer Highway (behind the firehouse).

  • Jackson Street will be closed between Newark Street and Observer Highway
  • Madison Street will be closed between Newark Street and Observer Highway
  • Westbound New York Avenue will be closed at Harrison Street.

Additional closures may be necessary during the overnight hours of Wednesday, April 29, due to striping activities. Those potential closures will be announced early next week.

Hoboken Police will be on site to assist with detours during work hours.

All schedules are subject to change due to weather and other possible impacts. More information on these, and other projects, and their impacts on traffic, can always be found on the City’s Construction Update webpage: hobokennj.gov/construction.
