AVOID 32 MILE/ M-53 SOUTHBOUND DUE TO UNDERGROUND WORK BEING DONE UNDER THE ROAD WAY. UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE
We understand the frustration and traffic delays many residents are experiencing near the M-53 corridor, and I want to provide an update on the situation.
The work currently taking place is being done underground — not directly on the roadway — which is why the lane closure remains necessary during construction. As part of the effort to bring infrastructure to the west side of M-53, crews encountered unexpected large boulders approximately 2 to 3 feet in diameter beneath the inside southbound lane. Once those materials were removed, loose sand above shifted and created a void underground.
Our engineering team continues working closely with the Macomb County Department of Roads and MDOT to develop a safe and effective solution so both lanes can reopen as soon as possible. At this time, we are hopeful the issue can be resolved within the next two weeks, weather and conditions permitting.
I know many residents have found alternate routes, and unfortunately those roads are becoming more congested as well. We truly appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding while this important infrastructure work is completed safely.
This project was necessary to extend sewer infrastructure to the west side of M-53 and help ensure the property remains within Washington Township. Without moving forward with this infrastructure, there was a significant risk of losing the parcel to an adjacent community. This matter has been discussed publicly for several years with the property owner, during Township budget meetings, and at workshop sessions.
Thank you again for your patience as we work through this challenging but important project.
