Be Aware: EZ-Pass Transponder Thefts
The North Brunswick Police Department is investigating an increase in thefts involving EZ-Pass transponders from commercial vehicles. These devices are being removed from parked trucks and work vehicles, often during overnight hours.
How Thieves Are Operating:
· Targeting unattended commercial vehicles
· Removing EZ-Pass devices from windshields or dashboards
· Using stolen transponders to incur fraudulent toll charges
Protect Your Vehicle & Equipment: Remove your EZ-Pass when the vehicle is not in use Store transponders out of sight (glove box or secure compartment) Park in well-lit, high-traffic areas whenever possible Consider installing vehicle security cameras or alarms Regularly monitor your EZ-Pass account for unauthorized charges
If You Are a Victim:
· Report the theft immediately to police
· Contact EZ-Pass customer service to deactivate the device
· Review your account and dispute unauthorized charges
In most cases throughout the area, the thieves are taking transponders, but replacing them with other stolen transponders. Many people may not even notice that they have been switched. Please routinely verify that the transponders in your vehicles are the correct ones and actually yours. You may be responsible for any tolls and fees racked up on your transponders, so please be aware.
See Something? Say Something. If you notice suspicious activity around parked commercial vehicles, please contact the North Brunswick Police Department right away.
