OPD Increases Enforcement Efforts Ahead of Cinco de Mayo

For the safety of our community, the Oakland Police Department (OPD) will deploy additional resources citywide beginning tomorrow through Tuesday.

In past years, May Day and Cinco de Mayo celebrations have been disrupted by dangerous and illegal activities. Sideshows are among the most common issues. To address this, the public will see more officers, specialized units, and aerial support. These teams will work to deter and respond to criminal activity that threatens public safety. Working with our city and state partners, we will also enforce laws related to illegal parking, mobile vending, unpermitted food vendors, and bar inspections.

Our message is clear: illegal sideshows will not be tolerated. Anyone taking part in street takeovers or reckless driving will be cited or arrested. Vehicles used in sideshows will be impounded for 30 days.

During the last three Cinco de Mayo enforcement periods, OPD has towed more than 150 vehicles. Officers have issued more than 80 citations and made numerous arrests for illegal sideshow activity.

Our priority is the safety of residents and visitors. We are committed to protecting those celebrating responsibly. Anyone who threatens the well-being of our community will be held accountable.

We encourage everyone to enjoy May Day and Cinco de Mayo safely, responsibly, and respectfully.
