DATE/TIME: Friday, May, 1, 2026 at 1:31 p.m.

INCIDENT: PC 273.5(a) - Corporal Injury to a Spouse

LOCATION: 74000 Block of Twilight Drive, Twentynine Palms, CA

SUSPECT(S): Carl James Queeen, 34-year-old Male, Resident of Twentynine Palms, CA

VICTIM(S): Confidential

SUMMARY:
On Thursday, April 30, 2026, at approximately 4:18 p.m., Deputies R. Maldonado and N. Arenas from the Morongo Basin Station responded to a residence in the 74000 block of Twilight Drive in Twentynine Palms.  The call for service was in response to a domestic violence incident.  Deputies arrived and contacted the victim, who was visibly shaken and exhibited signs of a violent assault.  Through investigation, deputies learned the victim's boyfriend, Carl James Queen, violently attacked her and strangled her to the point of unconsciousness.

After the attack, Queen fled the scene before deputies arrived.  Due to the severity of the assault and the clear risk of continued domestic violence, deputies obtained a warrant for Queen’s arrest.  Deputies Maldonado and Arenas tirelessly continued their investigation and searched for Queen.

On Friday, May 1, 2026, deputies utilized the Department’s FLOCK automated license plate reader (ALPR) system and attempted to locate Queen’s vehicle.  Using FLOCK, deputies were able to deduce it remained within Twentynine Palms.  This critical technology provided real-time investigative leads, allowing deputies to quickly narrow their search and maintain focus on protecting the victim.

Deputies subsequently located Queen’s abandoned vehicle within the city, leading them to believe he was within proximity of his vehicle.  Given the violent assault against the victim the day prior and escalating risk factors associated with the majority of domestic violence cases, deputies immediately returned to the Twilight Drive residence to check the safety of the victim.

Deputies Maldonado and Arenas arrived and immediately heard the victim’s muffled screams coming from inside the residence.  Recognizing the clear and present threat to the victim’s life, deputies forced entry into the residence, where Queen was found in the act of violently assaulting and strangling the victim once again.

Deputies immediately detained Queen, effectively stopping an ongoing violent attack that posed a significant risk of serious bodily injury or death. The victim sustained additional visible injuries consistent with repeated physical assault.  Queen was arrested for violation of PC 273.5(a) – Felony Corporal Injury to a Spouse/Cohabitant and booked into the West Valley Detention Center.

This act by Queen underscores the severe reality faced by victims of domestic violence.  These incidents also reiterate the significance of rapid deputy response and how the use of advanced technology may have inevitably saved the victim's life. Furthermore, this incident exemplifies the strong collaboration and dedication between contract cities and the Sheriff’s Department in leveraging technology - technology that enhances real-time response capabilities to achieve a shared primary objective - protecting public safety. The use of FLOCK was critical in locating the suspect's vehicle, which ultimately led to locating the suspect and protecting the victim from further harm.
