Avoid Becoming a Victim of a Phone Scam
Every year, people lose large amounts of money, sometimes even their entire life savings, because of phone scams. Scammers use a variety of tactics to trick you into giving up your personal information or money. While some may seem friendly and helpful, others rely on intimidation and threats. No matter their method, their goal is the same: to take what is rightfully yours. Here are some tips to recognize and protect yourself from phone scams:
  • There is no prize: If someone tells you that you’ve won a lottery or prize but asks for payment to claim it, it’s not a real prize. Real prizes come without strings attached.
  • You will not be arrested: Scammers might pretend to be law enforcement or government officials, threatening you with arrest, fines, or deportation if you don’t pay right away. Don’t fall for it. Legitimate agencies don’t operate this way.
  • You do not need to make a decision right now: Trustworthy businesses won’t pressure you into making an immediate choice. On the other hand, scammers will try to rush you into a decision.
  • Only scammers insist on specific payment methods: If someone insists on payment via wire transfer, gift cards, cryptocurrency, or payment apps, they are likely a scammer. These payment methods make it almost impossible to get your money back.
  • Government agencies will not call you for sensitive information: No legitimate government agency will unexpectedly reach out to ask for your Social Security number or other personal information.
  • You should not be receiving those calls: Sales calls from companies you don’t have a relationship with are illegal if you’re on the National Do Not Call Registry. If someone is breaking the law by calling, it is most likely a scam.
