GTPD Media Release- Gloucester Township Police and Fire Departments Respond to Residential Fire 5-6-2026

Gloucester Township Police Media Release- Gloucester Township Police and Fire Departments Respond to Residential Fire 5-6-2026

On Tuesday, May 5, 2026, at approximately 9:03 PM, officers from the Gloucester Township Police Department were patrolling the area of Chews Landing Road when they observed heavy smoke coming from the area of Cameron Circle.

Officers responded to the 50 block of Cameron Circle and observed fire visible through the roof of a residence, with flames extending to the rear of the home and attached sunroom. The fire also spread to a neighboring residence, causing exterior damage.

Due to weather conditions and blowing embers, officers, detectives, and fire personnel evacuated several nearby homes as a precaution. The resident of the affected residence, along with two pets, safely exited the home. No injuries were reported.

Fire personnel from Squad 88, staffed by Gloucester Township Fire Districts 2 and 4, Chews Landing Fire Department Station 82, Blackwood Fire Department Station 84, Erial Fire Department Station 86, and Lambs Terrace Fire Department Station 85 responded and brought the fire under control. Mutual aid assistance was provided by the Bellmawr, Pine Hill, Runnemede, and Somerdale Fire Departments, along with Inspira Emergency Medical Services and Virtua Medics Advanced Life Support. The Gloucester Township Office of Emergency Management (OEM) also responded to assist.

On Wednesday, May 6, 2026, at approximately 4:42 AM, the fire rekindled. Fire personnel and Gloucester Township Police officers responded, and the fire was again placed under control.

One family was displaced as a result of the fire and is temporarily staying with family members. Temporary housing assistance was offered by Gloucester Township OEM and declined at this time. All evacuated residents were later permitted to return home except for the displaced family. The adjacent residence was deemed habitable, and the occupants were permitted to return home. Local roadways in the area were temporarily closed during the incident but were later reopened once conditions stabilized.

The fire remains under investigation by the local Fire Marshal's Office in coordination with the Gloucester Township Police Department. At this time, there is no indication that the fire is suspicious in nature; however, the investigation remains active.

This incident serves as a reminder of how quickly fire conditions can develop. Residents are reminded to ensure smoke detectors are installed, functioning properly, and tested regularly. Residents should also use caution when using candles, stoves, fireplaces, smoking materials, and space heaters. Heating sources should never be left unattended, and combustible materials should be kept a safe distance away. Improper disposal of smoking materials remains a common cause of residential fires. Smoking materials should be fully extinguished and disposed of in proper containers.
