Alaska DOT will temporarily close the South Klondike Highway between mileposts 6.6 and 14.8 on Thursday, May 7, from approximately 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. to conduct an additional avalanche hazard reduction mission in the corridor. During a previously conducted avalanche hazard reduction mission earlier this week, an avalanche covered a section of the roadway. To further reduce the remaining hazard in the area, DOT will conduct a follow-up mission on Thursday requiring another full closure. Motorists and tour operators should plan for the closure window and allow additional travel time. If avalanche debris reaches the roadway during the operation, an extended closure may be necessary to allow crews to safely remove the material. DOT will provide updates as conditions warrant. Another NIXLE will be sent out when the road reopens.
