San Leandro Police Investigates Officer-Involved Shooting

San Leandro, CA – On Thursday, May 7, 2026, at approximately 8:07 PM, officers from the San Leandro Police Department responded to a request to conduct a welfare check on an adult male who was reportedly making suicidal statements to a friend. The reporting party advised the male was suffering from depression.

Officers initially responded to the male’s residence in the 14500 block of Santiago Road but were unable to locate him. While continuing their search, officers located the male seated inside a vehicle at the San Leandro Marina near the boat launch.

Officers initiated contact and spoke with the individual for several minutes while he remained inside the vehicle. During the encounter, the male produced a firearm and pointed it at officers. In response to the immediate threat, an officer-involved shooting occurred.

Officers immediately requested medical aid. The male was treated at the scene by emergency personnel but was ultimately pronounced deceased. A firearm was recovered from the subject at the scene.

Three SLPD officers were involved in the shooting and were not injured.

Consistent with SLPD policy, criminal and administrative investigations into the officer-involved shooting will be conducted by the San Leandro Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division and Professional Standards Unit, respectively, followed by a review by the Office of the Independent Police Auditor for the City of San Leandro. Additionally, the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office will conduct a concurrent investigation. The involved officers will be placed on administrative leave per protocol.

While SLPD remains committed to transparency, the release of additional information related to this incident will be limited at this time to protect the integrity of the ongoing investigation and in accordance with applicable laws.
