OPD NEWS:

Update in Fatal East Oakland Traffic Collision

Today, Interim Oakland Police Chief James Beere provided an update on a fatal collision that occurred Saturday night in East Oakland.

Preliminary findings indicate the driver was traveling northbound on 85th Avenue at a high rate of speed. The speed is estimated to be over 50 mph. The driver then attempted to make a left turn onto International Boulevard. The vehicle collided with multiple people and vehicles.

“Three people lost their lives in this incident, and three others were seriously injured," said Chief Beere. “Our thoughts remain with everyone affected by this heartbreaking event.”

“Let me take a moment to thank the Oakland Police Department, the Oakland Fire Department, paramedics, and all first responders who responded quickly to the scene," said Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee. “Our hearts are with the victims, their families, and their loved ones and all those who were impacted.”

One victim remains in critical condition, another is in stable condition, and a third has since been released.

The driver, a 17-year-old juvenile, was also transported to a local hospital for treatment. He was later arrested in connection with the collision. Investigators are seeking a warrant for toxicology testing to determine whether alcohol or drugs were a factor in this incident. This remains an active and ongoing investigation.

Department of Violence Prevention Chief Holly Joshi said, “I’ve deployed violence interrupters to prevent retaliatory violence and make connections between the impacted individuals and support services.”

The Oakland Police Department would also like to thank the community members who assisted at the scene for their willingness to step in during a critical moment until officers arrived.

Assistant City Administrator Michelle Phillips said, “Public safety is not achieved by a single strategy. It requires collaboration, compassion, accountability, and continued investment in our communities. Together we will keep working for a safer Oakland."

The case has been turned over to the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office for charging.
