*Update* #LASD Homicide Investigators Responding to a Deputy-Involved Shooting Inv., 5500 blk of N. Orangecrest Ave. #Azusa
On Wednesday, May 20, 2026, at approximately 3:30 p.m., San Dimas Sheriff’s Station deputies responded to the 5500 block of Orangecrest Avenue in the city of Azusa regarding an attempted suicide call. Information in the call stated a male at the location was harming himself with a knife.
Deputies arrived on scene at which point an adult male, armed with a knife, exited a side gate of the residence. The male refused to comply with any orders given by deputy personnel to surrender the knife and subsequently charged at the nearest deputy situated near a patrol vehicle.
A deputy involved shooting occurred and the male was struck by gunfire.
Deputies along with Fire Department personnel rendered medical aid to the male. The male was transported to a local hospital and was listed in critical condition.
A knife, with an approximate 3-inch metal blade, was recovered at the scene.
There is no additional information at this time.
The investigation remains ongoing.

NARRATIVE:
Los Angeles County Sheriff's Homicide investigators are responding to a deputy-involved shooting. The incident occurred Wednesday, May 20, 2026, at approximately 3:23 p.m., on the 5500 block of N. Orangecrest Avenue, in the unincorporated area of Azusa.
The male adult suspect was struck by gunfire and no deputies were injured.
Deputies immediately rendered aid to the suspect. The suspect was subsequently transported to a local area hospital.

Whenever a deputy-involved shooting occurs involving Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies, and a person is struck by gunfire, multiple independent investigations immediately begin at the scene. These include separate investigations by the Sheriff's Homicide Bureau and Internal Affairs Bureau.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department immediately notifies the Office of the Inspector General who provides independent oversight throughout the investigative process. Once concluded, a preliminary review is conducted by the Critical Incident Review Panel to determine whether any immediate actions are warranted. Every aspect of the shooting is reviewed by the Sheriff's Executive Force Review Committee. Input from Constitutional Policing Advisors is provided during the process.
The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, Justice System Integrity Division, conducts a legal analysis to determine whether any criminal charges will be filed and if the shooting was legally justified.
