SMPD is Proud to Introduce Our First Electronic Storage Detection K9

San Mateo PD welcomes Quinn, a 3-year-old Electronic Storage Detection (ESD) and Comfort canine to our family. He and his handler, Detective Kyle Cambron, have completed training and are eager to start work together this week.

Today, the San Mateo Police Department is proud to introduce K9 Quinn, a highly trained Electronic Storage Detection (ESD) K9 who will serve both investigative and community support roles within our agency.

K9 Quinn is a 3-year-old Labrador Retriever born on March 3, 2023. Quinn is specially trained to detect concealed electronic storage devices commonly used to store digital evidence, including:

  • Cell phones
  • Micro SD cards
  • External hard drives
  • Tablets
  • Laptops
  • Other digital storage media
Electronic Storage Detection K9s are valuable investigative tools that assist law enforcement in locating hidden digital evidence that may otherwise go undetected during searches and criminal investigations.
Quinn and his handler, Detective Kyle Cambron, successfully completed a rigorous 100-hour Electronic Storage Detection training course through the United States Secret Service in Hoover, Alabama. Together, the team has received specialized training in Electronic Storage Detection, obedience, therapy, and community engagement functions. Det. Cambron has been with SMPD for 4 years and has been assigned to our Criminal Investigations Bureau for the past year and a half.

In addition to investigative work, K9 Quinn will also serve as a comfort and community support K9, helping foster positive relationships between law enforcement and the community. Quinn will participate in community events, school visits, outreach programs, and other opportunities to build trust and strengthen connections with residents.

“K9 Quinn represents another step forward in our commitment to utilizing specialized tools and training to better serve and protect our community,” Chief Barberini says. “In addition to assisting with investigations, Quinn will also help create meaningful interactions with the public through outreach and support.”

We look forward to the positive impact K9 Quinn will have both operationally and within the community.
