Beware of Fire-Related Scams and Fraudulent Contractors

The Simi Valley Police Department would like to remind residents to remain vigilant for potential fraud and scam activity related to the recent fires and other natural disaster events. Unfortunately, individuals sometimes attempt to take advantage of victims during times of crisis by offering fraudulent repair services, cleanup assistance, insurance help, or financial support scams.

Residents are encouraged to use caution when dealing with unsolicited individuals or companies that suddenly appear offering emergency repairs, debris removal, or other services. Be wary of anyone requesting large upfront payments, cash-only transactions, or high-pressure agreements. Always verify contractor licenses, request written estimates, and avoid sharing personal or financial information with unknown individuals.

Scammers may also pose as government officials, charitable organizations, insurance representatives, or utility workers in an attempt to gain access to homes or obtain sensitive information. Residents should independently verify credentials before providing information or allowing anyone onto their property.

The Simi Valley Police Department encourages community members to report suspicious activity or suspected fraud attempts immediately. By remaining alert and taking a few extra precautions, residents can help protect themselves and others from becoming victims during these challenging times.
