ESCONDIDO – On Wednesday, May 20, at approximately 2:14 p.m., officers with the Escondido Police Department responded to the area of East Mission Avenue and Buchanan Street for a report of an assault that had just occurred.
Upon arrival, officers located an elderly male suffering from significant injuries. A bystander who intervened during the incident was also injured. Officers learned the suspect had fled the area on foot prior to their arrival.
Officers conducted a search of the surrounding area and located an individual matching the suspect’s description near East Mission Avenue and Begonia Street. The suspect was positively identified and taken into custody without incident. He was identified as Thomas Caleb Butler, a 32-year-old resident of Escondido. Detectives responded to assist with the investigation. The victim was transported to a local hospital in critical condition.
On the evening of May 24, 2026, the Escondido Police Department was notified by the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office that the victim had died. The cause and manner of death are pending determination by the Medical Examiner. The deceased has been identified as Kerry George Sheron, a 69-year-old resident of Escondido.
Butler was previously booked at the Vista Detention Facility for attempted murder (Penal Code 664/187(a)). The case is in the process of being presented to the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office, which is reviewing the circumstances to determine whether charges will be amended.
