Secure Your Vehicle: Make sure to roll up your car windows all the way and turn on the car alarm; however, don’t depend solely on it to stop theft. A car thief can break into your vehicle and flee in about 30 seconds, often too quickly for an alarm to make a difference.
Keep Your Vehicle Tidy: Thieves are on the lookout for easy targets! Make sure that nothing is left in plain sight inside your car. Almost anything visible from outside, even if you think it’s not worth much, might be seen as valuable by a thief. Spare change, sunglasses, or even an empty bag (which a thief might think contains something) could catch their eye.
Conceal All Proof: Keep your electronics and accessories out of view or take them with you. Just having these items in your car could lure thieves, including power cords, adapters, and GPS mounts. If you remove the suction cup from your windshield, be sure to clean the mark it leaves; it clearly indicates you have a GPS device.
Stash Before You Park: Make it a habit to put away items you want to keep hidden in your trunk before you arrive at your destination. Thieves often watch busy parking lots for people who are about to hide valuable items.
And remember, report any vehicle break-ins:
If you see a break-in happening, call 911 right away. Give the dispatcher as much detail as you can, and please remain on the line with them.
