Police Investigate Vandalized Robots

HOLLISTER, CALIFORNIA – May 29, 2026 – On May 28, 2026, officers responded to reports of vandalism involving robotic assessment units operating in the area of the 800 block of Fourth Street and the area of West and Fifth Streets. The incidents were reported by Daxbot, the company responsible for deploying and operating the assessment robots.
Earlier this week, Daxbot deployed several specialized assessment robots throughout the city to evaluate sidewalks, pedestrian pathways, and curb ramps. The project is funded through the federal Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) Grant Program and is designed to help the City identify areas where pedestrian infrastructure may not meet current accessibility standards. The information collected by these robots will assist the City in planning future improvements to sidewalks and walkways, helping ensure safer and more accessible routes for all residents, including individuals with disabilities and those who rely on ADA-compliant pathways.
The robots are equipped with advanced measuring and recording technology that allows them to accurately assess sidewalk conditions, identify potential accessibility barriers, and document areas requiring improvement.
During one incident, surveillance footage captured by the robot shows a male subject riding a bicycle who stopped, approached the robot, and intentionally knocked it onto its side before leaving the area.
In a second incident, a subject approached a robot that was operating near the intersection of Fourth and Line Streets. The individual appears to strike the robot before approaching a second robot that was recording the interaction. The subject then appears to strike the second robot and pour what is believed to be beer over the unit before leaving the area. Both incidents were captured by the robots' onboard camera systems.
While the presence of these robots may naturally generate curiosity, the Hollister Police Department reminds the public that these units are performing an important public service.
The Hollister Police Department is asking for the public's assistance in identifying the individuals involved in these incidents. Anyone who witnessed the events or has information regarding the identities of those responsible is encouraged to contact the Hollister Police Department at (831) 636-4331.
