El Cerrito — Police have arrested a suspect following a violent armed robbery that occurred on the Ohlone Greenway near Wall Avenue.

On Wednesday May 27 at approximately 1:30 PM, a 59-year-old woman was walking southbound on the Ohlone Greenway when she was approached by the suspect and violently assaulted. During the attack, the victim was struck in the back of the head with a large metal wrench and then struck again on the side of her face. The assault caused deep cranial and facial lacerations and resulted in the loss of teeth. Once the victim was incapacitated, the suspect forcibly pulled the victim’s purse from her.

Despite her injuries, the victim was able to walk to a nearby restaurant and signal for help. A witness contacted police and observed the suspect hiding in nearby bushes while awaiting officers.

Richmond Police Department officers, who initially believed the incident occurred in their jurisdiction, arrived on scene, and contacted the victim. The victim immediately pointed out the suspect’s location to officers. When officers attempted to detain the suspect, the suspect fled on foot, leading officers on a brief pursuit.

After a short foot chase, officers took the suspect, identified as Dakauna Buckley, a 38-year-old woman from San Pablo, into custody without further incident.

The victim was transported to a local trauma center for treatment of her injuries.

The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with additional information related to this incident is encouraged to contact the El Cerrito Police Department at (510) 215 4435 or via email: [email protected]
