DRONE MONITORING: HOW CRIMINALS ARE UTILIZING DRONES TO CARRY OUT ILLEGAL ACTIVITIES

I recently received a call from a resident regarding an unmanned drone orbiting over her home. This type of reconnaissance is one of the latest tactics criminals are utilizing to commit home burglaries. Before a burglary, criminals often deploy unmanned drones (commonly fitted with high-definition cameras) for these purposes:

  • Identifying Security: Drones fly close to roofs and eaves to pinpoint the locations of alarm systems, security cameras, and window locks.
  • Scouting Layouts: They outline the roof, backyard, and access points (such as second-story windows or patios) that are not visible from the street.
  • Monitoring Habits: They observe when you depart for work or take a vacation, confirming whether the home is truly unoccupied.

You can safeguard your property and prevent drone surveillance by taking these proactive measures:

  • Block Aerial Visibility: Make it more difficult for cameras to capture valuable information.
  • Defensive Planting: Grow fast-growing trees, tall shrubs, or thick vines around your patio and sensitive garden spots to form natural privacy barriers.
  • Awnings and Covers: Install retractable awnings or pergola covers to block views of your backyard and outdoor living areas.
  • Keep Windows and Blinds Shut: When you head out, make sure to close the blinds and curtains on second-floor windows and skylights to prevent drones from having a direct view into your home.
  • Protect Your Belongings: Always avoid leaving valuable items (such as bicycles or costly tools) exposed, as they may draw the attention of both ground thieves and aerial observers.
