Take Five Briefing – 6/9
Here is the latest Take Five briefing from the June 9, 2026 meeting of the Mayor and Borough Council:
1) FIFA World Cup Watch Parties: Council Member Hale invited residents to enjoy the excitement of the FIFA World Cup at two free downtown watch parties in partnership with Main Street Highland Park. Join friends and neighbors at the municipal parking lot near 212 Raritan Avenue on Sunday, June 28 for a Group Stage match and Sunday, July 19 for the World Cup Final. Each event will feature live match viewing on a large LED screen, and family-friendly activities in a fun community atmosphere. Bring a chair, grab takeout from one of our downtown restaurants, and enjoy the games right in the heart of Highland Park. Events run from 2 to 6 pm, with live match coverage from 3 to 5 pm.
2) Road Safety Updates – E-Bike Law and New Driver Training: Council Member George shared two important public safety updates. First, the Highland Park Police Department is holding a New Driver Program for motorists age 18 and under on Sunday, June 14, from 12–2 pm. The free training includes classroom instruction and simulated traffic stops. Space is limited to 10 participants; parent or guardian attendance is required for drivers under 18. Click here to register. Additionally, beginning this July 2026, New Jersey’s e-bike law will go into effect, requiring all e-bike riders to be at least 15 years old, wear a helmet, and possess a valid driver's license, e-bike license, or permit. All e-bikes must be registered with the NJMVC, while motorized bicycles (mopeds) will also require insurance. Licensing and registration programs are expected to launch in the coming months. 3) Safe Routes to School Implementation: Borough Council introduced Capital Ordinance 26-2130, and approved a companion Resolution 6-25-144, advancing the first phase of the Borough’s long-awaited Safe Routes to School Project. Together, these actions increase the project budget by an additional $706,151 in federal transportation funding from the New Jersey Department of Transportation. The funding will support intersection and pedestrian safety improvements, ADA-compliant upgrades, engineering services, and construction management at various locations throughout Highland Park. The public hearing and vote for this Ordinance will be held on June 23, 2026.
4) Historic General Tire Sign Getting a Facelift: Council authorized a Request for Proposals to transform the historic General Tire sign at 70 Woodbridge Avenue into a unique public art installation. As part of the Borough’s Neighborhood Preservation Program and ongoing Woodbridge Avenue revitalization efforts, the project aims to preserve a recognizable piece of the corridor’s history while creating a new community landmark. Artists and designers will be invited to submit concepts that reimagine the iconic sign, celebrate Highland Park’s character, and contribute to a more vibrant and welcoming Woodbridge Avenue corridor.
5) Tree Watering Contract Awarded: Council awarded a contract for the Borough’s 2026 Tree Watering Program to Bartlett Tree Experts, ensuring that trees planted in 2025 receive the care needed to establish healthy root systems and thrive long-term. The program reflects the Borough’s commitment to preserve its urban canopy, protect investments in tree planting, and advance community goals related to shade, stormwater management, air quality, and neighborhood beautification. Regular watering during the critical establishment period helps trees survive and supports their long-term health.
