Mayor Emily B. Jabbour and the City of Hoboken today announced public safety preparations ahead of the 2026 Fourth of July fireworks displays on the east river and Jersey City waterfront as well as Sail 250 which are expected to draw large crowds to Hudson County and Hoboken the weekend of July 4.

“This year’s Fourth of July celebration is especially meaningful as our nation marks 250 years of independence and we are excited to welcome residents and visitors alike to celebrate along our beautiful waterfront,” said Mayor Jabbour. “We ask everyone to celebrate responsibly, plan ahead, and avoid driving whenever possible to help ensure a safe and enjoyable holiday for all.”

The City Administration, the Office of Emergency Management (OEM), and Hoboken Police Department (HPD) have been working closely with neighboring municipalities, regional transportation authorities, as well as State and County officials to plan for a safe and smooth holiday weekend.

Traffic Management; Vehicle access to be limited into Hoboken

Hoboken OEM has issued a gridlock advisory for July 4, as significant traffic congestion is expected throughout the day and evening, particularly in the late-night hours, following the fireworks display. The HPD Traffic and Transportation Unit has implemented a Limited Travel Access Plan, to help facilitate vehicle movement and maintain access for emergency responders.

Those who chose to drive in and out of the city before and after the event should plan for massive delays. In 2024, traffic leaving Hoboken lasted over six hours.

To support public safety and emergency operations, the City will implement traffic restrictions beginning as early as 8 a.m. on July 4, limiting access into Hoboken from all gateways into the city. Hoboken Police officers will be stationed at entry points and access will be limited to residents and individuals with proof of pre-paid reserved parking in garages, business owners and people traveling to work within the city, emergency personnel, transit vehicles, and other authorized vehicles. Unauthorized vehicles will be turned away.

Visitors are strongly encouraged to avoid driving and use public transportation including PATH, NJ Transit rail, ferries, and the Hudson Bergen Light Rail to travel to Hoboken, and to walk or bike, whenever possible.

Road closures

The following road closures are planned for July 4, beginning at 8 a.m.:

  • 16th Street between Willow Avenue and Park Avenue
  • Sinatra Drive between Newark Street and 15th Street

This list is subject to change for security reasons.

Police officers will be assigned to key locations throughout Hoboken to help mitigate congestion, direct traffic, assist drivers with detours, and keep pedestrians safe.

Streets will reopen as crowds, traffic, and clean-up allows. Traffic management plans, including road closures, are subject to change.

Reserved parking available at municipal garages

Pre-paid reserved parking will be required on July 4th for all non-monthly customers at Garage B (28 Second St.), Garage D (215 Hudson St.), and Midtown Garage (371 Fourth St.). An all-day event rate of $55 (not including transaction fees) will apply at these three municipal garages.

To purchase a reserved parking space, CLICK HERE. Sales will close on Thursday, July 2, at 11:59 p.m. or earlier if spaces sell out. Please note that reserved spaces are expected to sell out quickly.

Drivers parked in all garages, including municipal and private facilities, may experience heavy delays exiting the garage in the evening after completion of the fireworks display.

Prepare for on-street parking restrictions

Temporary no parking signs will be posted in various areas throughout the city to preserve emergency access lanes. Vehicles left in temporary no-parking zones or emergency access areas will be towed at the owner’s expense.

There will be zero tolerance for violators blocking designated emergency routes or travel lanes following previous years where drivers abandoned their cars in illegal areas due to heavy congestion, blocking emergency access and creating hazardous conditions for first responders.

Temporary no parking signs will be posted in restricted areas no less than 72-hours prior to the restrictions being put into place. Please make sure to look for, and abide by, all signs, or risk towing at the vehicle owner’s expense.

Restricted areas

The following properties will be closed to the public for 24 hours on July 4:

  • Pier C
  • Sgt. William Feskens Little League Field
  • Sinatra Park Soccer Field

Public Safety Staffing and Reminders

Hoboken Police Department, as well as the Hoboken Fire Department, Hoboken Volunteer Ambulance Corps (HVAC), and the Office of Emergency management will deploy enhanced patrols and staffing levels throughout the holiday to support the large crowds and ensure rapid emergency response capabilities. The Division of Health will have inspectors on duty to ensure food vendors are abiding by all health codes.

The City and public safety officials also remind residents and visitors that there will be zero tolerance for driving under the influence, public drinking, disorderly conduct, or other unlawful behavior. Please remain vigilant and report any suspicious behavior to Hoboken police at 201-420-2100.
