A Quick Shoutout to the Duarte SAO Team

On May 16, 2026, a series of suspicious fires was intentionally set in the City of Duarte, posing a significant danger to residents, businesses, public safety personnel, and surrounding communities.

Through extensive investigative efforts, the Duarte SAO Team, which is composed of Deputy Valenzuela, Deputy Gonzales, and Deputy Fraijo, utilized a combination of Department and City resources, intelligence gathering, witness interviews, surveillance review, and investigative analysis to develop critical leads.

The team learned the suspect was unhoused and possibly resided within a riverbed encampment near the City of Duarte. The Duarte SAO Team coordinated with Duarte Public Safety personnel and conducted a targeted operation within the riverbed to locate and apprehend him. After an extensive search for the suspect in the riverbed, he was not located.

On June 2, 2026, a call for service was dispatched regarding another structure fire in the city. Believing the incident may have been connected to the arson suspect, the Duarte SAO Team quickly responded to the location.

While at the scene, a witness provided a description of the suspect and his last known direction of travel. Acting quickly on this information, the Duarte SAO Team conducted an area search.

Approximately one-half a mile away, Deputy Valenzuela observed an individual matching the suspect description concealing himself behind bushes near a shopping center parking lot.

As the Duarte SAO Team attempted to contact the suspect, he fled on foot without provocation. Deputies Fraijo and Gonzales immediately exited their patrol vehicle and pursued the suspect. After a brief foot pursuit, the suspect gave himself up, and he was arrested without further incident.

The suspect is believed to be responsible for six arson-related incidents, including four structure fires within the City of Duarte and two vehicle fires in the City of Pasadena.

The actions of the Duarte SAO Team brought great credit upon themselves, the City of Duarte, Temple Station, and the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Great job, team!
